Understanding post-pandemic attitudes to travel

We worked with a major European Transport Operator to understand post-pandemic attitudes to travel.

What we did

To understand post-pandemic attitudes to travel, we completed over 1,600 surveys and more than 40 qualitative interviews – studying five journey types across six of European markets: UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.

Challenge

We were asked to conduct research into passengers’ propensity to begin using public transport again after the Covid pandemic, their predicted future transport journeys, and their needs and priorities for feeling confident to travel. Following the pandemic, passenger attitudes were expected to have changed, particularly with more employees choosing to work remotely or adopting hybrid working patterns.

Approach

Our team used a mixed-method research approach, which spanned across the UK, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Slovenia. We created a survey to gather information and followed up on responses to the survey with qualitative interviews, gaining greater insight into the responses given by individuals. We also studied the different journeys that passengers took in each of the markets the client operated in, learning what their preferred routes and methods of travel were for leisure and work.

Outcome

We generated a list of nine key findings, the main themes from our research were that passengers wanted more flexibility in their work and travel options, and were more likely to travel for leisure. However, passengers still wanted convenience, value for money and reliability when using public transport. These findings were published by the operator in an insights paper, driving business change for the future.
